Adidas ZX 8000: first running shoe to have Torsion System (1988)

The Adidas ZX 8000 was released in 1988, and was the first Adidas running shoe to have the Torsion System implemented into it. Adidas claim that in 1989 a new world record was set at the Rotterdam Marathon by a runner wearing ZX 8000 sneakers. The Torsion System provides midsole arch support: so that the foot is given support from the heel to the front of the foot. Many previous, earlier running shoes, did not provide adequate arch support, and this could create a 'fallen arch': which results in foot pain and discomfort when walking, running or jogging.

The ZX 8000, the new era of modern sneakers designed for jogging and running. The ZX is a running shoe with a range of colourful colourways, such as this purple, yellow, and black version.

The ZX 8000 represented a new era of running shoes that featured sophisticated technology to improve comfort and performance. Before the ZX 8000, most Adidas running shoes conformed to the style and design of sneakers dating back to the 1960's. Apart from lightweight materials, and an eva-midsole, running shoes were fairly basic. The ZX 8000 and the Torsion System changed 'all that', and would herald an era where ongoing technologies - like Traxion, Adizero, adiPRENE - would need to be designed to entice runners to buy Adidas sneakers instead of their competitors.

The upper of the ZX 8000 is made from a combination of mesh and suede; the suede provides the stability and rigidity around the toes and heel. The inner lining of the ZX 8000 is made from a comfortable textile lining, the sneaker also features foam padding for the tongue and collar, and the only place the trefoil logo is stitched is on the tongue. The ZX 8000 comes in wide range of colourful colourways; such as: Aluminum / Samba Blue / White Vapour; Onix / Running White / Black; Solid Grey / White / Bold Onix; Solid Grey / Collegiate Green / Solid Grey; Grey / Metallic Silver / Purple; and Black / Orange / Purple.
