Adidas Forum: velcro-strapped basketball sneaker (1986)

The Adidas Forum is a basketball sneaker that was used in the NBA during the late 1980's. The Adidas Forum was released in 1986 and replaced the Adidas Top Ten; the Adidas Top Ten was endorsed by the NBA's 'top ten' basketball players, and the Adidas Forum was endorsed by top players like Patrick Ewing.

The Adidas Top Ten was by far the most popular basketball sneaker in the late 1970's and the early 1980's. Adidas shoes were endorsed by the top NBA stars, and their shoes performed better than those of it's competitors. However, when the Forum was released in 1986, the Nike Air Jordan had been released in 1985. The Nike Air Jordan was $40 cheaper than the Forum, and steadily Nike replaced Adidas as "the" shoe brand of the NBA and basketball.

The Adidas Forum was released in a hi-top, mid-top and low-top version, and it's primary design feature was a velcro-strap placed above the laces. The velcro-strap was merely a cosmetic design feature and not a performance enhancing feature; although Adidas claimed it allowed players to tighten the shoe around the ankle. The Forum incorporates the classic three stripes design, and the traditional colourway for the shoe is navy blue and white.

The Adidas Forum is traditionally released with a full grain leather upper; the leather grain has a soft feel for comfort. The leather toe area of the shoe is perforated to make the shoe breathable and keep the foot cool. The inner lining of the shoe is made from textile. The Forum has an EVA midsole for cushioning and impact protection. The Forum has a rubber cupsole for durability, and it is a pivot-point cupsole to increase multidirectional performance. The heel incorporates a stabiliser clip to increase performance for jumps and landings.

Present day, the Adidas Forum is not marketed for use in competitive basketball matches: the Forum is a heritage sneaker that is part of the Originals range of Adidas sneakers. The Forum has been released in a vast range of colourways; such as: White Cream / White Chalk; Snakeskin Embossed Black Leather; Collegiate / Navy Blue / Chalk White; and Collegiate / Royal White.
