The Adidas Energy Boost is a running shoe, released in 2013, that features Adidas' boost energy-returning material. The Energy Boost running shoe is the latest development in the evolution of Adidas running shoes, and is the descendant of the EQT and ZX range of running shoes. In the late 1980's Adidas released the ZX running shoe that showcased the TORSION® SYSTEM, and in the 1990's they released the lightweight EQT running shoe.
The boost energy-returning material is a cushioning material that absorbs shocks, retains the energy, and provides that energy for the next step. The boost material is placed within the midsole of the running shoe, and has a structured design that provides stretch, bounce, softness, and responsiveness. The Energy Boost material was co-developed by Adidas and the German chemical company Badische Anilin- und Soda-Fabrik (BASF); BASF manufacture a selection of polymers - such as polybutylene terephthalate, polyacetal and polyethersulfone - that have a wide range of applications.
The boost energy-returning material has primarily been implemented into the Energy Boost range of shoes. Adidas has marketed the material as being contradictory: soft and reactive. Adidas has plans to combine the boost technology with their Adizero technology; Adizero uses materials to lower the weight of footwear and apparel. The boost energy-returning material can be viewed in the above image (it's painted yellow by Adidas). Some shoes that include the boost material are the: Adidas SS15 Energy Boost ATR; Adidas Energy Boost 2.0 ESM; Adidas Energy Boost 2.0 ATR; Adidas Energy Boost Reveal; and Adidas Energy Boost Volley.
The shoe shown in the above images is the Adidas Energy Boost ESM; this shoe features: TORSION® SYSTEM for midfoot arch support and integrity; techfit® upper that molds to the foots shape; boost energy-returning material; outersole that has integrated ADIWEAR for durability; and a heel cage design that is inspired by the heel cage of the ZX running shoes. The Energy Boost running shoes - whether it's the ESM, ATR, LTD, or Reveal - retain the same shoe design and by-and-large the same list of technological features.
